Prevent Roof Damage from Squirrels

For homeowners with a squirrel problem, roof damage can become an issue.

For homeowners with a squirrel problem, roof damage can become an issue. These little critters might be cute, but they can use their sharp teeth and claws to work through shingles and destroy roof decking and underlayment. Fortunately, roofers know a few tricks for discouraging rooftop rodents.

Trim the trees

Watch the squirrels in the yard for a bit to determine how they access the rooftop. Most often, trees are to blame. A long branch that extends over or near the rooftop may be all a squirrel needs to close the gap between the tree and the roof, as they are good jumpers. Trim tree limbs at least 8 feet from the rooftop to minimize the chances squirrels can use the tree as a launchpad.

Remove bird feeders

Bird feeders attract birds and provide an easy food source that attracts squirrels to the property.

To decrease the chance of the roof being overrun with rodents, consider eliminating bird feeders.

Although the birds are glorious to observe, homeowners will appreciate not having to deal with roof damage.

Install squirrel guards

Trimming trees and eliminating bird feeders will help, but doing so might not eliminate the squirrels from the yard or keep them off the rooftop.

Consider installing squirrel guards to discourage the critters from seeking shelter in the trees. Securing a sheet metal wrap around the bases of trees and poles can help prevent roof damage, as it makes for a surface too slippery for squirrels to climb.

Cover cables and wires

Squirrels can quickly scamper up most of the wires and cables running up the side of the house.

To prevent roof damage:

  • Block their access to the rooftop from every avenue.

  • Take several 2-foot sections of PVC pipe and saw through them lengthwise.

  • Pull the sections apart, then clip over any exposed cables and wires. The PVC pipe will spin and knock off any curious squirrels.

Seal rooftop entry holes

Rooftop damage from squirrels isn’t limited to the outside. Rodents often gnaw their way inside, destroying the underside of the roof decking and shredding attic insulation.

Check the rooftop and exterior walls for any potential entry holes and cracks. If there are any, seal them, but only after making a lot of noise to be sure no squirrels are still inside. Don’t skip small cracks and holes, as these wily rodents can squeeze through the smallest openings.

For homeowners with a squirrel problem, contact a reliable roofing contractor to help determine how best to protect the roof. They can inspect the property, identify ways to deter squirrels, and advise of any needed repairs.
