Discover Why Your Chimney Needs a Roof Cricket

Roofing systems protect homes. These systems, including chimneys, need additional elements to prevent water buildup and damage. One of the vital elements that ensure complete protection is the roof cricket. We'll discuss roof crickets and why we need them.

What is a roof cricket?

A roof cricket is a double triangle structure typically installed on the chimney's high side. They also go by other names like saddles or diverters. These structures have an integral role in preventing water and ice buildup. Good design and proper positioning are essential for them to work.

Furthermore, roof crickets consist of different materials. Many match it to the shingles or use metal or wood.

Why does a chimney need a roof cricket?

When it rains, all the water flows along the roof. Correctly installed roof crickets will divert the water to the gutters and prevent it from remaining on the roof and around the chimney.

If the water pools around the chimney for an extended period, it can cause severe (and costly) damage. The chimney's structure could deteriorate and cause leaks. Over time, the whole roofing system could suffer extreme damage and even collapse if unrepaired.

Roof crickets are especially significant for preventing ice and snow buildup. If you live in an area with a lot of ice, a roof cricket will prevent the ice and snow from hitting the chimney and putting a strain on the roof. The ice and snow buildup can damage the roof and its underlying structures, cause leaks, and damage the inside of your house.

Are roof crickets mandatory?

In some cases, installing roof crickets is mandatory. According to the International Building Code, chimneys wider than 30 inches (762 mm) should have a roof cricket installed. Keep in mind this code dates from 2012. People with older roofs may not have the crickets installed and should check their chimneys.

Even though a roof cricket may not be mandatory for your chimney, installing it can only be beneficial. Chimneys are a vulnerable part of every roofing system, and most professionals recommend protecting them with a roof cricket. Although roof crickets may seem like an unnecessary addition, they can extend the lifespan of your entire roof structure.

Why is it best to hire a roofer?

Roof crickets are only functional if installed correctly and at the correct angle. Roofers with years of experience have installed hundreds of roof crickets and know precisely where to position them for the best results.

Moreover, professionals know the risks of climbing on the roof and have the necessary equipment that keeps them protected.

Get your roof inspected

If you're unsure if your chimney requires a roof cricket, reach out to a professional. They will inspect the roof, locate potential weak points, and recommend solutions. Even those with roof crickets installed should get the roof inspected once a year, ideally during summer.
